The Group 4 (11/2026) and Group 2 (07/2026) notices ask for a colour photograph taken at a studio, against a white background. They also rule out mobile phone photos, selfies, photocopies, and backgrounds such as family functions, tourist spots, plants or buildings. A blue or grey studio backdrop, or a wall at home, doesn't match that wording.
Why changing the background online isn't the fix
Background remover apps are the first thing most people try. They have four problems for a TNPSC photo:
The source is still wrong. A selfie with a white background pasted in is still a mobile photo. The notice rules out the type of photo, not just the colour behind you.
The date is still wrong. If the photo was taken before the notification date, recolouring it doesn't change that.
Edges show. Automatic cut-outs struggle with hair, ears and shoulders. Even at 130 × 170 px, a grey halo or a clipped ear is visible, and the notice asks for both ears to be visible.
Faces get edited. Some AI tools quietly smooth skin, reshape faces or redraw clothes. An identity photo has to look like you on exam day. Many of these services also upload your photo to their servers.
For these reasons the TNPSC photo compressor deliberately does not change backgrounds. It only crops, resizes and labels the photo you give it, on your device.
The reliable fix: one studio visit
Ask any local studio for a "TNPSC photo, white background, with name and date". Studios in Tamil Nadu get this request every recruitment season, and it costs little. You get the right background, a studio source and a fresh photography date in one go.
Ask for the file to be sent as a document on WhatsApp, not as a photo, so it isn't recompressed. Before you leave, check that both ears and part of your neck are visible and there's no dark shadow behind your head.
Off-white is normal, blue is not
Studio backdrops often look slightly grey or cool because of lighting and camera white balance. A backdrop that is plainly white but a little uneven is what most studio photos look like. A clearly blue, grey or cream backdrop is a different colour, not off-white. If you're unsure, ask the studio to correct the colour. They fix it at the source, with no cut-out edges.
